Many people working in the cross-disciplinary field of GIS education may have few co-workers in their organization that they can learn from, brainstorm ideas, or even just “talk shop”. They may be looking for ways that they can keep up with the latest trends, opinions, and best practices. A great way to do this is through social media, which allow you to become connected with others who share your interests, resulting in the building of a community around those interests.

The key to community building is to make direct, personal connections with those that have shared interests. Traditionally, this was done by attending formal meetings and conferences. However, social media, such as Twitter, have allowed quantum leaps to be made in finding and making these connections. With searching and filtering, it is easy to quickly find people who share your professional interests.

Georgia Tech’s No. 1 basketball recruit has agreed to meet with the soon-to-be-named coach of the Yellow Jackets before giving any further consideration to requesting a scholarship release.

Give all the credit for recruiting to Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich, who has maintained an open line of communications with Milton High’s Julian Royal. The 6-foot-8 forward signed with Tech over UGA last November after an intense recruiting battle between the two archrivals.

“We’re just kind of waiting; we’re on hold,” said Royal’s father, Charles Royal. “I have to admit that Dan Radakovich has been good about calling us regularly to say things are progressing. He hasn’t shared who the frontrunner is.

“We did talk about the possibility of getting a release. But [Radakovich] sa

The odds are better for winning the Powerball grand prize than having that many erasures by chance, according to statisticians consulted by USA TODAY.

A USA Today investigative piece looks at high erasure rates on standardized tests at Washington, DCs Crosby S. Noyes Education Campus, which went from a school in need to one of DCs shining stars.  The report notes that three years ago, DCs Office of the State Superintendent of Education asked test-maker McGraw-Hill to do erasure analysis after some schools showed big gains in in proficiency rates on April 2008 tests.  Among 96 schools flagged for wrong-to-right erasures were eight of the 10 campuses where [DC Superintendent Michelle] Rhee handed out so-called TEAM awards to recognize, reward and retain high-performing educators and support staff, as the districts website says. Likely candidates this year received an email with a link to a video of Furda informing them of the good news. In the vi
