With the threat of a double-dip recession looming, the Stanford Blood Center is offering an encore of the successful “Giving Blood Works” promotion for eager job seekers just in time for Labor Day.

Donors who give blood at one of the center’s three locations in Palo Alto and Mountain View between Sept. 1 and 13 will have the opportunity to attend a special career-counseling and networking event on Sept. 13 for free.

The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the center’s location at 3373 Hillview Ave. in Palo Alto, and will feature career experts Lisa Stotlar and Ellen Schulman. The workshop, titled “Reduce your job-search time significantly, leveraging a high-touch networking approach in the high-tech valley,” will focus on the latest networking techniques. Recruiters

Ending two weeks of speculation, Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Katie Leach and Donna Korn to fill the vacant seats on the Broward School Board.

Leach, 39, of Fort Lauderdale, works at Nova Southeastern University and will take Jennifer Gottlieb’s countywide seat. Korn, 40, of Davie, is a commercial real estate agent and will take the District 4 seat vacated by Dave Thomas.

Both will start serving on the non-partisan board, effective Friday. Their first School Board meeting is at 1:30 p.m. Monday, a workshop in which the board will go over semi-finalists for the superintendent position.

Oddly enough, Korn was one of 44 people who applied to be superintendent. (I have left her a message and hope to hear back about her plans.)

Gottlieb and Thomas abruptly resigned within less than two days of each other earlier this month.

Here’s the announcement put out by Scott’s office:

Leach, 39, of Fort Lauderdale, is an educator at Nova Southeastern University.

Well…

Education Overview | posted by Daniel Baker No Comments »

This year has been the most eventful of my life (so far.) I really didnt want to write this last blog post, but here it is.

I met some really great people this year, and I will miss almost every one of them a lot. We havent had class since Monday, and I miss them already. I know that everyone will accomplish great things at college, and find what it is they truly love doing, whether it be journalism or neuroscience or something else entirely.

Ms. Sheehan has been a fantastic teacher, mentor, and advisor. Our whole class appreciates everything shes done for us on her own time, staying late to edit our videos and always giving plenty of feedback on our papers. She has helped me mature as a writer, and I cant thank her enough for all the other things shes helped me with.

A new Missouri law prohibiting teachers from having private online conversations with students suffered a double setback Friday. First, a judge blocked it from taking effect because of free speech concerns. Then the governor called for its repeal.

The law limiting teacher-student conversations through social networking sites such as Facebook had been scheduled to take effect Sunday. But Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem issued a preliminary injunction blocking it until at least February, saying the restrictions “would have a chilling effect” on free speech rights.

A couple of hours later, Gov. Jay Nixon said he would ask lawmakers to repeal the restrictions during a previously scheduled special session that starts Sept. 6. Nixon’s request goes even further than the judge’s order, which was confined to private conversations on non-work-related websites.
